The LHYC Junior Sailing program offers sailors ages 5-17 a pathway designed to develop their skills at every stage of their sailing education. Whether your sailor is just starting out or ready to race, our programs are designed to support growth at every level.
Sailors progress through age-appropriate programs that build skills and confidence, while instruction is tailored to each individual sailor to support continuous development.
Parents are encouraged to enroll sailors in the program that best aligns with their age, knowing each sailor will be appropriately challenged in a supportive and engaging environment.

Wind Chasers is designed for our youngest sailors to enjoy a fun and memorable introduction to sailing in a safe, supportive environment.
Sailors are introduced to basic water safety, parts of the boat, and how sails work, while also having the opportunity to steer and experience being on the water. The focus is on building comfort around the lake, developing awareness, and having fun.
Sailors are grouped together and sail aboard Vanguard Nomad 17' sailboats with instructors, allowing them to learn as a team while gaining confidence on the water.
This once-a-week, half-day program is an ideal starting point for young sailors and a natural progression into Little Skippers the following year.

Little Skippers is an introduction to sailing designed for sailors who are ready to begin learning and sailing on the water.
Sailors learn foundational skills including sailing terminology, basic seamanship (knot tying and rigging), and boat handling such as steering, sail trim, and capsize recovery. The program emphasizes learning through hands-on experience both on land and on the water.
Sailors primarily sail in pairs in Optimist dinghies under close coach supervision, with additional group sailing in Vanguard Nomad 17' sailboats. Through drills and guided practice, sailors develop independence, awareness, and control on the water.
The program focuses on building skills in a fun, supportive environment while encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Little Skippers Goals:

Junior Captains is designed for sailors who are ready to build on their foundational skills and begin sailing more independently.
The program focuses on developing strong boat-handling skills, including sail trim, body positioning, weight placement, tiller control, tacking, jibing, and capsize recovery. Sailors progress from paired sailing toward confidently skippering an Optimist dinghy on their own.
Sailors continue to refine their skills through structured drills and on-the-water practice, with additional group sailing in Vanguard Nomad 17' sailboats. Emphasis is placed on developing independence, control, and decision-making on the water.
This program prepares sailors for more advanced sailing opportunities, including progressing into the Race Team or pursuing recreational sailing, including moving into our Adventure Sailing Camp.
Junior Captains Goals:

Adventure Sailing is a teen-focused program designed for sailors who are new to sailing or who want to continue enjoying time on the water in a relaxed, recreational environment without the pressure of racing. Instruction is tailored to each sailor’s experience level, allowing both new and returning participants to continue progressing at an appropriate pace.
Sailors develop practical, real-world sailing skills including rigging, boat handling, sail trim (powering and depowering), steering, capsize recovery, and basic navigation. Sailors work together in a supportive, team-oriented environment to develop the lifelong skill of sailing and water safety.
Sailors will primarily use Open Skiff and Vanguard Nomad sailboats. No prior sailing experience required.
Adventure Sailing Goals:

The LHYC Junior Sailing Race Team is designed for experienced sailors who are ready to train and compete in regattas while continuing to develop advanced boat handling and racing skills.
The team focuses on single-handed Optimist (Opti) sailing, with additional training in Open Skiff sailboats. Sailors refine boat speed, starts, mark roundings, and tactical decision-making, while learning and applying the Racing Rules of Sailing through structured drills and practice races.
Sailors follow US Sailing Optimist fleet guidelines, progressing through Green, White, Blue, and Red fleets based on age and experience. Opportunities include local and regional regattas, as well as participation in LHYC Sunday club racing.
The program is intended for sailors with prior experience who are confident independent skippers. Admission is based on coach evaluation. Sailors must be able to rig and de-rig independently, sail upwind with control, and recover from a capsize without assistance.
This is a season-long commitment for sailors who are motivated to improve and actively participate in practices and regattas.
Sailors competing in Opti fleets are required to provide their own Optimist sailboat.
Race Team Program Goals:

Halsey Island Race Week is a highlight of the summer and offers junior sailors the opportunity to build racing skills and showcase their progress in a fun, supportive environment.
The week begins with three days of specialized clinics led by experienced LHYC sailors, featuring both classroom instruction and on-the-water training. Sailors develop an understanding of racing rules, tactics, and strategy while gaining confidence in a race setting.
The program culminates in the Halsey Island Race, where sailors compete in fleets organized by age and experience level. This format allows all participants to race alongside peers in an appropriate and encouraging environment.
Halsey Island Race Week is open to all sailors who participated in LHYC programs during the summer. All participants are recognized, with awards presented to top finishers at the conclusion of the event.

The Optimist is an 8 foot pram style sailboat and is the introductory boat for our program. Younger beginners will often be paired in the boat as they learn however, once experienced enough, the Optimist is a single handed boat. These boats can be sailed up to the age of 15, although most students move into a larger boat before then. Optis are also an international class, with many regattas all over the world.

The Open Skiff is the newest addition to our fleet. The boats were added in 2022 and are the next step for our single-handed sailors after the Optimist. Older beginners may learn their basic sailing skills on the boat but it is also used right up to the racing level.

The ILCA (formerly known as the Laser) is a popular one-design racing class of small sailing dinghy sailboats raced from junior sailing through the Olympics. The ILCA is a challenging and rewarding boat that encourages athletic skills, subtle steering, and tactical excellence. This class is an excellent way to develop racing skills for future high-school and collegiate racing.

The Nomad is a 17' sailboat that provides us with significant versatility. The Nomad is the perfect boat for our instructors to teach small groups with a little more of a hands on approach. It is also the boat that will be used for our adult, family, or small group private lessons. It will even be used to help introduce some kids and adults to the world of racing in an stress-free environment.
We offer junior sailing programs for children aged 5 - 17. Sailors can sign up for the sailing session that best fits their age and experience.
No, LHYC Junior Sailing is designed for all kids, whether they have experience or not. Kids without sailing experience will be taught the basics, while those with experience will be challenged as they develop their skills. Sailors will be grouped by age and experience, while everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow their sailing skills.
All sailors must be competent swimmers and able to complete a basic swimming test on Day 1 of each session. Beyond that, we ask that your child has a readiness to try new things, are fit to handle light physical activities, and are willing to participate fully in activities.
Not at all. LHYC offers both recreational and competitive pathways. Every junior sailor can choose whether they want to work towards joining the Race Team or just sail recreationally. For some junior sailors, the competition of racing is a lot of fun, for others this is not the case. Little Skippers, Junior Captains and Adventure Sailing programs focus on sailors becoming safe & comfortable on the water, learning about the sport of sailing, and having fun. Coaches may facilitate mini "races" that are used as drills, these are not scored and the place one finishes does not matter. For young sailors that want to begin racing more seriously, please reach out to discuss joining the Race Team and also explore opportunities crewing for our Sunday Club Series.
Yes. The swim test is administered on the first day of each sailing program session. All junior sailors are required to pass the swim test. If your child is not a strong or confident swimmer, please contact the Sailing Director.
The swim test consists of swimming one lap (2 lengths) between the docks (about 120 feet total), without a life jacket. Sailors must then demonstrate that they can tread water while putting on a life jacket, unassisted.
Wind Chaser sailors must be able to swim between docks (about 60 feet), with their life jacket on.

Junior Sailing is scheduled in two-week sessions, with the entire Junior Sailing summer season lasting 6 weeks. Sailors may join for as many sessions as they like. Many children register for all three sessions and experience a significant amount of progress over the summer, however, even one session is a great experience.
The Race Team is a full season 6-week program.
Yes. Many junior sailors enroll for the entire summer season (all three sessions) or any combination of sessions that work with their family's schedule. Coaches will work with your child to build upon their skills and knowledge all summer long. We highly encourage junior sailors to register for as many sessions as they are able.
Junior Sailing sessions are structured in a way that that allows kids of all sailing levels to grow their skills during any session of camp. The first day of each session is a time for new students to learn the basics and returning sailors to refresh. The coaches assess the skill level of each child and then plan the session accordingly, with more experienced sailors working on more advanced skills. There are plenty of sailors that join for just one session each summer and build on their skills year after year.
We do our best to group kids by their age and experience, however there are various factors that go into determining the groups including the skill and age of the participants in the session. If you have any questions or requests in terms of which course your child should take, please contact us for help in choosing the right course.
The LHYC Junior Sailing Program is designed to be a progression through skills as your child grows. Children new to sailing (ages 7-11) should register for a Little Skippers camp. In order to register for the Junior Captains camp, sailors must have already participated in a Little Skippers camp or be able to demonstrate the equivalent skills and knowledge.
Older children (ages 12-17) who are new to sailing or who want to continue developing their skills in a relaxed, recreational environment should register for the Adventure Sailing camp. They will be grouped with sailors their own age and will sail in the afternoons, alongside the Race Team Sailors.
The Race Team Program is for sailors that have previous sailing experience, are capable independent skippers, and have completed the Junior Captain camp at LHYC (or equivalent). Acceptance into the Racing Team Program is based on prior sailing experience and coach evaluation. Race Team sailors will follow US Sailing Optimist fleet guidelines, progressing through Green, White, Blue, and Red fleets based on age and experience. All Race Team sailors are required to provide their own Optimist sailboat for participation in the Race Team.

Good closed-toe shoes are important aboard a boat as they provide traction on slick wet surfaces and offer protection. Shoes should be soft, have a non-marking sole and should be fast drying. Deck shoes, water shoes, or non-marking tennis shoes are recommended. Black soled shoes, sandals, and flip flops are not permitted. Bare feet are not allowed. Those who arrive without the appropriate foot wear will be sent home.
Yes, life jackets are required to be worn at all times on the docks and aboard the vessels. Sailors must bring their own properly fitting, US Coast Guard approved life jackets to all water/sailing activities. Please stress the importance of this rule with your child.
Sailors are responsible for their own food and drinks. Programs do not operate during lunch hours, but sailors are welcome to bring snacks. There is ample opportunity to refill water bottles at the Club.
Junior Sailors and their families are welcome to purchase lunch at the LHYC Snack Bar, before or after camp, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm. The Snack Bar is open daily and offers a wide variety of lunch, snack, and ice cream options.
Sailing instruction continues even if it rains. Rain storms generally pass over the area very quickly and rarely cancel sailing for the entire day. If the weather prevents us from sailing, we will spend time learning skills and facilitating activities on land. Our Coaches are expert sailors adept at monitoring the weather and will head to shore if there is any threat of danger.
In the event of extreme weather or power outages, you will be contacted if there are any delays or cancellations.
Absolutely. Parents are welcome to stay at the Club during your child's sailing session. The lakeside porch has many tables and chairs that are perfect to watch your child on the lake. Parents with access to boats may also head out on the lake to see their junior sailor in action. While at the Club, families may order from the Snack Bar.
Once the sailing session and lunch is finished for the day, access is limited to LHYC members only.
You will be provided with contact information for the Sailing Director and Coaches before the start of the session. If there is an immediate need to contact your child during the day, please reach out to the Sailing Director.
Yes. Contact the Sailing Director or Junior Sailing Coaches for more information.
For extra safety measures, we require that a parent/guardian is present at LHYC during program hours. This Shore Parent can help supervise students that are not sailing for any reason and coordinate any issues that may arise. During a 2-week session, we will need 8 volunteers. Please contact the Junior Sailing Director for more information.
